Police made six arrests and recovered two stolen motorbikes in a Bedford crackdown. Vehicle crime in central Bedford is up five months running, to 44 in July.

Bedfordshire Police has made six arrests in a two-week operation against motorbike theft in Bedford. Officers have also recovered two stolen motorbikes.

The force announced the results on 10 September. It says the arrests were on suspicion of a number of offences, including:

  • theft of a motor vehicle
  • burglary
  • possession of offensive weapons
  • possession of drugs

The force has not said whether anyone has been charged. An arrest is not a charge, and nobody has been named.

The operation is led by Bedford’s Community Policing Team, working with Bedford Borough Council. It targets people involved in vehicle theft and the crime that comes with it, including violence and antisocial behaviour. Officers are running patrols in hotspots, where offences are being committed and where stolen vehicles are being found. The force has not named those areas.

What the police said

Chief Inspector Andy Smith said: “We recognise the impact that this offending has on our communities, and we are committed to identifying those responsible and disrupting their activities.

“This operation has delivered notable results so far, but our work is far from over, and we would urge anyone with relevant information, footage or concerns to report it to us.”

He added that information from the public helps officers “build a clear picture of when and where incidents are taking place”.

The figures behind the crackdown

The force’s statement gives no crime figures. The official police.uk data does, and it shows why central Bedford is a focus.

Vehicle crime recorded within a mile of the town centre has risen for five months in a row. Police.uk counts theft of a vehicle, theft from a vehicle and interference with a vehicle together, so these figures cover cars and vans as well as motorbikes.

  • 17 in February 2026, the lowest month in the last year
  • 44 in July 2026, the latest month published
  • 47 in September 2025, the only month in the last 13 that was higher than July

Vehicle crime within one mile of central Bedford, July 2025 to July 2026

Over April to July, 155 vehicle crimes were recorded within that mile. That compares with 133 in the same four months of 2025, a rise of about 17%.

The outcomes are the harder part. Of those 155 crimes, police.uk records 120 as “Investigation complete; no suspect identified”. That is 77%. Another 20 were still under investigation at the latest update, and 14 were closed as unable to prosecute a suspect. Outcomes for recent months can still change as cases progress.

The streets with the most vehicle crime over those four months were spread across the town. Endsleigh Road, Russell Avenue and Bedesman Lane each had four. Police.uk places each crime “on or near” a street to protect victims’ privacy, so these are approximate.

What it means for you

If you own a motorbike, moped or scooter, the force’s advice is to layer your security. Its statement recommends:

  • a disc lock, chain lock and cover, used together
  • locking the bike to something immovable wherever possible
  • always removing the keys and using the steering lock, even for a short stop
  • a Thatcham-approved alarm, immobiliser or tracker
  • a garage or shed with upgraded locks, lighting and ground anchors
  • a well-lit, overlooked spot if you have to park elsewhere
  • property marking the bike and its parts
