Bedford bin collection days: no bank holiday changes

Bedford Borough Council does not move bin collections for bank holidays. Its own bank holiday page says collections “will run as usual”, including over the late summer weekend. Christmas is the exception, and the only one.

That single fact is what most people arrive looking for. The rest of this page covers what the council splits across ten separate pages: which bin takes what, what garden waste and bulky collections cost, how long you have to report a missed bin, and when the tip on Barkers Lane is open.

Two things changed in Bedford this year and both affect what goes in which bin:

• Weekly food waste collections started on Monday 30 March 2026, for houses and flats alike.
• Kerbside glass moved into the orange bin from Monday 1 December 2025, for every residential and commercial property in the borough.

Which bin, and how often

Bedford runs an alternate weekly collection. Black one week, orange and green the next. The food caddy goes out every week.

Bedford still does not take flexible or soft plastics such as film lids and wrap, or hard plastics such as toys and garden furniture. Vapes are banned from the black bin and have to go to the tip.

The things that get bins rejected

• Black or opaque sacks of recycling will not be collected. Extra recycling needs a clear or white transparent bag.
• A cardboard box for extra recycling is only allowed in dry weather. Wet cardboard cannot be recycled at all.
• Extra garden waste left beside a full green bin is not collected.
• Extra black-bag waste beside a full black bin is not collected.

Batteries

Bedford collects household batteries at the kerbside, which many councils do not. Seal them in a small clear plastic bag and put the bag on top of the black or orange bin, never inside it. Accepted sizes are 6V, D, C, AA, AAA, 9V and button.

Find your collection day

The council’s bin day lookup takes a postcode or street name and returns your day, your next two collections and a printable annual calendar. We are not going to reproduce it here, because rounds differ street by street and a copied date would go stale.

Put bins out by 6am on the day. That is the deadline the council enforces when it decides whether a missed-bin report is valid.

Bank holidays and Christmas

For the late summer bank holiday the council’s bank holiday opening hours page says plainly that “bin collections will run as usual”. The Household Waste and Recycling Centre also opens as normal.

Christmas is different. Bedford does move collections then, and it publishes a revised calendar in late November. For December 2025 and January 2026 the pattern was:

Note which way that runs. Bins in the week before Christmas went out earlier, not later, in some cases two days earlier. The equivalent dates for Christmas 2026 have not been published yet.

Garden waste is free here, and that is unusual

Bedford Borough charges nothing for garden waste. The green-lidded bin is emptied fortnightly from 1 March to 30 November with no subscription.

The council calls this a non-statutory service, meaning it does not have to provide it, and it restarted collections on 2 March 2026 with an explicit commitment to keep it free. Councillor Nicola Gribble, portfolio holder for environment, said the council had “committed to keeping this valued service” despite “current financial pressures and cuts to council funding nationally”.

Next door, Central Bedfordshire charges £58.23 for a year’s garden waste subscription.

Bedford collected 9,477 tonnes of garden waste between March and November 2025. All of it is composted locally at Ravensden, by open windrow composting, which is why food waste cannot go in the green bin: the process is open to the air.

If your green bin is not big enough you can buy a second one, or take garden waste to Barkers Lane, where it is accepted free.

Bulky waste: £45.50, and £22.80 of that is not refundable

The detail worth knowing before you book: the £22.80 admin fee is not refunded if you cancel once you have paid, and you need to give at least 24 hours’ notice to get any refund at all.

If you receive Council Tax Support you can get 50 per cent off, but only on a collection of up to five items.

Bookings are by phone only, on 01234 718060, paying by card. Items have to be at the front of the property by 6am on the day.

Collected items include bed bases and mattresses, televisions and monitors, white goods, furniture, rugs, lino and vinyl, and bicycles.

Missed collection: you have two working days

Bedford will only accept a missed-bin report if all five of these are true:

• you live in Bedford Borough
• the bin was out in the correct place on the correct day by 6am
• you are reporting within 2 working days of the original collection day
• the bin was not overloaded or too heavy, and held the right waste
• an orange bin held only recyclable items

Miss the two-day window and there is no report to make. You wait for the next scheduled collection or take the waste to Barkers Lane.

One useful quirk: if the council’s own lookup still shows the collection as scheduled, it already knows the round was not completed and will return the next day. There is no need to report it.

The tip: Barkers Lane, no booking, but bring ID

Bedford Borough runs one Household Waste Recycling Centre, on Barkers Lane, Bedford.

• Open 9am to 5pm, seven days a week. Last entry 4.50pm.
• Saturdays 9am to 7pm between 1 April and 30 September. Last entry 6.50pm.
• Open on all bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
• No booking needed for residents. Businesses must book.
• Proof of address is required. A current council tax bill, or a driving licence showing your address. Photo ID without an address needs a separate proof in the same name.

The council names its own busiest times: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 9am to 1pm and 3.30pm to 5pm. With limited space to queue on site, it warns that people may be turned away when it is busy.

From 1 October 2026: register your number plate, not a permit

The permit system ends on 1 October 2026. From that date every resident using Barkers Lane has to register their vehicle’s number plate online instead, free, and the ANPR camera at the entrance checks it automatically. A car or pickup registration lasts two years, a van six months and a hired vehicle 24 hours, with a maximum of two vehicles per address. Until 30 September a free waste permit still has to be applied for in advance if you are:

• bringing a fridge or freezer
• bringing car tyres
• disposing of four to six items of DIY waste in a month
• arriving in a van, pickup or flatback
• arriving in a car towing a single-axle trailer

None of those needs a separate permit once the registration system starts.

The DIY waste limit

This is the rule that catches people mid-renovation. DIY waste is capped at 3 items per calendar month without a permit, 4 to 6 with one, and more than 6 cannot be accepted at all. Beyond that you need a skip or a licensed carrier.

An “item” is defined tightly: one bag of up to 50 litres of rubble, sand, soil or tiles counts as one item, as does a single bath, sink, toilet or shower tray. Kitchen units and worktops count per 1.5 metre section.
