Bedford's Harpur Centre grotto opens Saturday 21 November, £6 a child or £5 with code HC1. Plus Father Christmas at Wrest Park from 5 December, £12.

Bedford’s town centre Santa’s grotto opens at the Harpur Centre on Saturday 21 November 2026, the same day as the Christmas lights switch-on, and it costs £6 for one child. The centre published its grotto times and prices on 23 October. Outside the town, English Heritage’s Father Christmas sessions at Wrest Park, Silsoe, start on Saturday 5 December and are already on sale.

The quick answer

Harpur Centre grotto, Bedford town centre

The Harpur Centre’s grotto page says every child gets a gift, and photographs with Santa can be bought from Event-Photos on the day. The grotto is open every Saturday and Sunday from Saturday 21 November, then daily from Saturday 19 December until Christmas Eve.

Opening times, as the centre lists them:

  • Saturday 21 November (switch-on day): 10am to 4pm.
  • Saturdays from 28 November: 10am to 5pm.
  • Sundays: 10am to 3pm.
  • Monday 21, Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December: 10am to 5pm.

The page does not say whether you book a slot or queue on the day, so expect the busiest waits on Saturday afternoons and in the last week before Christmas.

The rest of the centre’s Christmas hours. Its Christmas opening times give 9am to 6pm on switch-on day, late shopping to 8pm on Thursday 10, Thursday 17, Friday 18 and Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 December, 8am to 5pm on Christmas Eve, closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, 10am to 5pm on Boxing Day and Monday 28 December, and 9am to 5pm on New Year’s Eve. The centre marks the Boxing Day and 28 December hours with an asterisk but does not say why.

The lights themselves go on at 5pm that day in Harpur Square, with a free stage programme from midday, according to the council’s announcement. Our Christmas lights switch-on page has the full running order.

Father Christmas at Wrest Park, Silsoe

English Heritage’s Father Christmas at Wrest Park runs on weekends from Saturday 5 to Sunday 20 December, plus Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December. Father Christmas tells some seasonal stories to the group, then each family meets him for photographs and every child gets a traditional present to unwrap.

  • Sessions: 10.20am, 11am, 11.40am, 12.20pm, 1.40pm, 2.20pm and 3pm.
  • Price: £12 a child for non-members, £9.50 for English Heritage members, booked in advance. Non-members also need a Wrest Park admission ticket.
  • One adult per child. English Heritage limits each child to one accompanying adult to fit everyone in.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early, because the sessions start promptly.
  • How to book: choose your date on the Wrest Park booking page, then add the Father Christmas ticket under “enhance your visit”. Bring the confirmation, and your membership card if you are a member.

Wrest Park’s own page gives its hours as daily, 10am to 4pm, last entry 3pm. Admission prices only show on the booking calendar once you pick a date; English Heritage says booking early saves up to 15%.

The Snowman trail, from 7 November

Wrest Park’s Walking with The Snowman trail runs from Saturday 7 November 2026 to Sunday 10 January 2027, 10am to 4pm: twelve giant Snowman sculptures by different artists on the theme of The Twelve Days of Christmas, each hiding a letter that spells out a Christmas word. Pick up the trail map at the visitor centre. It is included in normal admission, and members get in free, so it pairs well with a Father Christmas session in December.

Free: the North Pole Elves at The Higgins, 12 December

The Higgins Bedford, on Castle Lane, has Imajica Theatre’s North Pole Elves on Saturday 12 December, at 1pm to 1.45pm and 2.15pm to 3pm, according to the museum’s family events page. It is a 45-minute musical storytelling show with singing, dancing and BSL signs for ages 3 to 8, and SEN and neurodivergent families are welcome. It is free, but places are limited and must be booked; the museum says booking opens after half term. Children must be with an adult.

Grottos not announced yet

  • The Secret Farm, Moggerhanger. Its events page says “Christmas returns along with Family Festive activities” but still shows “Santa’s Grotto COMING SOON 2026”, with no dates or prices on 28 October.
  • Garden centres and Woburn. We found no 2026 grotto dates published on the organisers’ own sites for the Frosts garden centres at Willington and Woburn Sands or for Woburn Safari Park, whose Christmas events page was offline on 28 October. Listings around the web with prices for these are from 2025.

We will add each one here when its organiser publishes dates.

Getting there and parking

The Harpur Centre is on Harpur Square in the pedestrianised town centre. On switch-on day the square will be busy from the morning, so allow extra time. Council car parks and their Saturday free hours are on our parking in Bedford page, and closures before a trip are on the roadworks and travel page. Wrest Park is south of Bedford off the A6 at Silsoe.

More for December: the Bedford Santa Run on the Embankment on 13 December, Shuttleworth in Lights, the Corn Exchange pantomime and the Christmas markets. Everything else on in the coming weeks is on our what’s on in Bedford page.
