Bedford Christmas Lights Switch-On: 2026 Date Not Set

Bedford’s Christmas lights switch-on is free, it is run by Bedford Borough Council rather than a traders’ group, and it happens in Harpur Square on a Saturday in the second half of November. As of 4 September 2026 the council has not published this year’s date, and it usually does not until the first half of November.

There is one more sign that nothing is live yet. bedford.gov.uk/christmas still redirects to the council’s “Christmas and New Year 2025” page, and that page is no longer being served. The shortcut works, the destination does not, which is what an unrefreshed seasonal alias looks like in September.

The dates it has actually run, from first-party sources

Always a Saturday, always in the back half of November, and the free entertainment always starts hours before the lights themselves, usually from midday.

In 2026 that points to Saturday 21 or Saturday 28 November. The council has not said which, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

The year it was called off, and what happened instead

In 2024 the switch-on was postponed with two days’ notice. The council cancelled the 23 November event “with regret” because of the winds from Storm Bert, and the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton, said it “would be irresponsible to proceed with an outdoor event that could potentially be unsafe.”

Two useful things came out of it. First, the town centre lights outside Harpur Square were switched on that evening anyway, after sunset, and Father Christmas still appeared at the Harpur Centre. Second, the rescheduled event on 30 November ran bigger than the original: the stage opened at 10am and ran to 7pm, with a countdown at 5pm.

So a cancellation notice is worth reading closely rather than skimming. It has not always meant the lights stay off.

What the day actually looks like

This is the 2025 programme, taken from Bedford Borough Council’s own announcement of 6 November 2025. It is the best guide to the shape of the 2026 day, not a 2026 timetable.

• Midday to 6pm in Harpur Square, free, no ticket.
• Local choirs, school groups and dance acts on the stage through the afternoon, plus a preview of that year’s Corn Exchange pantomime.
• 4pm: the Mayor of Bedford Borough switched the lights on.
• 5pm to 6pm: a Christmas disco from Bedford Radio.
• From 2pm: free face painting and colouring for children in the Harpur Suite, indoors.

Earlier years added a free crazy golf course on Silver Square and the Love Bedford Christmas wreath, made by Hay Lane Flowers and paid for by town centre businesses, as a photo spot. In 2022 the switch-on lit five Christmas trees in the town centre plus illuminations on Midland Road, Horne Lane, Bedford High Street and Tavistock Street, with fairy lights on the St Peter’s Street and Howard Street trees.

Kempston has its own, a week later

Kempston Town Council runs a separate switch-on at the Saxon Centre, 252 to 274 Bedford Road, MK42 8AY. In 2025 it ran on Sunday 30 November, midday to 6pm, with the Mayor of Kempston Town Council switching on at 4pm, plus craft stalls, children’s rides and food trailers.

Watch out for one thing if you search for it. Kempston Town Council still has a page live giving the date as Sunday 27 November, which was 2022. It reads as current. It is four years old.

The rest of the festive programme

The switch-on is the opening night of a season the council programmes across the town centre. In 2025 that season was:

• 29 and 30 November: the Bedford Music Service stage in Harpur Square, with more than 200 young performers across rock and jazz bands, choirs, steel pans, DJs, orchestras and dhol drummers.
• 6 and 7 December: Bedford Flea, Affordable Art and Local Produce in Harpur Square, with around 30 craft stalls in the Harpur Suite, a big screen showing Christmas films 10am to 8pm, a bar and food.
• 20 December: a Christmas singalong led by Grace Community Church in Harpur Square, at midday and 3.30pm.
• Free Christmas crafts at Bedford Central Library every Saturday in December, and a family Crafternoon at The Higgins Bedford on Sunday 14 December.

If you are searching for a “Bedford Christmas market”, that Harpur Square weekend in early December is the closest thing the town centre runs. It is a craft and flea market weekend rather than a chalet-style continental market.

Parking on switch-on day

Harpur Square is in the middle of the pedestrianised town centre, so everyone parks and walks. Council car parks in the town centre give two hours free on a Saturday, but you still have to take a pay and display ticket, which is the rule people are most often caught by. Tariffs, closing times and the free periods are set per car park, not borough-wide, and our Bedford parking guide has them one by one.

What we are waiting for

The council’s announcement, which in 2025 came on 6 November and in 2024 on 14 November. When it lands, this page gets the confirmed date, the stage times and the switch-on time. Expected: early to mid November 2026.
