Bedford moves bins at Christmas, often to a Saturday before it. The 2026 dates are due late November; here are last year's, tree drop-offs and tip closures.
Bedford Borough Council moves bin collections over Christmas and New Year, and it moves some of them earlier, not later. In both of the last two years the Monday round in Christmas week went out on the Saturday before. The council has not published its Christmas 2026 dates yet. Last year it announced them on 20 November, so expect this year’s list in the second half of November.
The quick answer

Which days are bank holidays this Christmas
The bank holidays are what drive the changes, and they fall differently this year. GOV.UK’s bank holiday list gives England three over the break:
- Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026
- Boxing Day (substitute day), Monday 28 December 2026, because 26 December is a Saturday
- New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January 2027
So this year the Friday rounds in both weeks, and the Monday round after Christmas, are the ones that land on a holiday. Outside Christmas, Bedford does not move bins for bank holidays at all; its normal rule is covered on our Bedford bin collection days page. We will not guess how the council will shuffle this year’s rounds: the pattern changed between 2024 and 2025, as the tables below show.
Christmas 2025: what the council did last year
These are the dates Bedford Borough Council published on 20 November 2025. They covered every household bin (black, orange-lidded recycling and food waste), and bins still had to be out by 6am.

Normal collections resumed on Monday 5 January 2026. The council said extra recycling would be taken if it was left in a clear sack or a cardboard box next to the orange-lidded bin, with large boxes flattened.
Christmas 2024: the year before
The 2024 list was announced on 4 December 2024, a fortnight later in the season than 2025’s. It used the same Saturday trick for the Monday round but pushed the rounds after Christmas later instead:

Garden waste stops on 30 November
The green-lidded garden bin is not part of the Christmas changes because it is not collected at all in winter. The council’s winter break notice says collections run from 1 March to 30 November and pause from 1 December to 28 February. Garden waste in Bedford is free, with no subscription.
Real Christmas trees: eight free drop-off points
Last winter the council ran free drop-off points from Tuesday 30 December 2025 to Friday 9 January 2026, later extended to Sunday 11 January. In 2024/25 the window was 30 December to 8 January. The eight sites were:
- Hillgrounds Road, Kempston, opposite the shops near Hartwell Drive
- Jubilee Park, Bedford, opposite North Lodge, Canvin Way
- Milton Ernest Garden Centre, Radwell Road, off the A6
- Mowsbury Park car park, Kimbolton Road, Bedford
- Podington Garden Centre, High Street, Podington
- Roxton Garden Centre, A421 near the Black Cat roundabout
- Seasons Garden Centre, Bedford Road, Wixams / Wilstead
- Barkers Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre
Real trees only, with every decoration, stand and pot removed. The trees go to Growing Beds Ltd at Ravensden for composting, and they are not shredded on site, so there are no free wood chips. The other option is to cut the tree up and put it in the green bin to wait for 1 March, as long as no piece of trunk is wider than 11cm.
The tip over Christmas
Barkers Lane is open 9am to 5pm every day, last entry 4.50pm, according to the council’s recycling centre page. It opens on bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. With Boxing Day falling on a Saturday this year and the bank holiday on Monday 28 December, check the council’s festive notice before driving there on either day.
