No trains run from Bedford on Christmas Day, and Christmas Eve services finish early. What is booked for December, what's still to come and where to park free.
No trains will run from Bedford on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, and services on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve will finish early. Neither Thameslink nor East Midlands Railway has published its Christmas timetable yet, and Network Rail has not announced its Christmas engineering work for the Midland Main Line. The one thing to know now: two Christmases ago the line between Bedford and St Pancras was shut for nine days, so check before you book anything for the week after Christmas.
The quick answer
- Christmas Day: no trains anywhere. Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December, has almost none; the bank holiday is Monday 28 December and its service is still to be confirmed.
- Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve trains finish earlier than normal. National Rail says its last-trains guide follows in late November or early December.
- Christmas 2026 engineering work on the Bedford line is not announced yet. In 2024 there were no EMR trains between Bedford and St Pancras from 21 to 29 December.
What National Rail has said about Christmas 2026
National Rail’s Christmas and New Year 2026/27 page covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027. So far it says:
- Thursday 24 December: trains on many routes finish earlier than normal. Do not assume the normal timetable.
- Friday 25 December: no National Rail services, as usual.
- Saturday 26 December: most operators run no service; a “very limited” service from a small number of operators, details to be confirmed.
- Monday 28 December: the substitute Boxing Day bank holiday. Which trains run is still to be confirmed.
- Thursday 31 December: trains on some routes finish earlier than normal.
- Friday 1 January 2027: some London routes will run special services after midnight. National Rail’s guide to them follows in early December.
Each operator’s Christmas pages, including Thameslink and East Midlands Railway, are due to be filled in “from the beginning of October onwards”. Journey planner results are “subject to change as timetables are still being finalised”, so a journey that looks fine now can change.
Engineering work already booked for December
National Rail’s engineering works list runs 12 weeks ahead, so it reaches into mid-December. As of 25 September these notices affect Bedford:

Nothing is yet listed for 19 December onwards, which is simply the edge of the 12-week window, not a sign the line is clear.
What happened two Christmases ago
The Christmas 2024 closure is the reason to wait before booking. Network Rail announced it on 26 September 2024, and its Midland Main Line notice set out the detail:
- From Saturday 21 to Sunday 29 December 2024 there were no EMR trains between St Pancras and Bedford, and Thameslink did not run between St Pancras and Harpenden.
- EMR passengers were sent from Euston to Milton Keynes and then by bus to Bedford to join their train north.
- Thameslink passengers went from King’s Cross to Hitchin or Potters Bar and then by bus; Thameslink trains still ran from those stations to Bedford.
- From 27 to 29 December there were no Thameslink trains through central London between St Pancras and London Bridge.
The work included a new bridge deck at Agar Grove in Camden and upgrades to the overhead wires between St Pancras and Bedford. Network Rail’s advice was to travel before 24 December or after 2 January.
That announcement came in late September, so the 2026 programme could be published any week now. We will add it here when it is.
Buses
Stagecoach East posts timetable changes on its service updates page for Bedfordshire. Its 2025 Christmas timetables page has been taken down, and nothing has been published for 2026 yet.
Parking in town over Christmas
Bedford Borough Council has not published any Christmas parking offer for 2026. Its Christmas and New Year page from last year is offline. The standing free parking, as the council set it out when it paused four-hour free parking in Allhallows and Lurke Street from November 2025, is:
- two hours free at Queen Street, Monday to Saturday
- two hours free every Saturday in council-owned town centre car parks
- free all day on Sundays in council-owned town centre car parks
- free from 6pm to 8am in the Allhallows, Lurke Street and Queen Street multi-storeys (Queen Street itself is open 6am to 10pm)
